Winter Guard Teams Coming to Kennesaw for Championships

More than 60 teams participating in Regionals at March 26-27 at Harrison High School

More than 60 Winter Guard International affiliated teams featuring over 1,000 performers will converge in Kennesaw, GA, for the 2022 Winter Guard International Atlanta regional championships. The event will be held March 26-27 at Harrison High School.

High school and independent performance teams from 10 states are scheduled to compete, bringing with them thousands of parents and fans who follow this fast-growing music-based competition. The WGI Atlanta Regional is a qualifying event for the 2022 WGI World Championships held in Dayton, OH in April.

  • Preliminaries (Saturday, March 26) - $15
  • Finals (Sunday, March 27) - $20

The Atlanta Regional Championship at Harrison High School will feature 65 teams competing in a preliminary round on Saturday, conducted from 10 am to approximately 10 pm. Qualifying teams will advance to a finals round to be held on Sunday, scheduled from 9 am to 5 pm. Awards are given for top finishers by competing divisions, and overall.

Spectators will find food and beverages on hand throughout the event. Several of the Atlanta region’s most popular food trucks are scheduled to be on site, including The Cheezy Truck, Chill Latte, Fair on Wheels, Fork and Spoon, Gaston Street Eats and Sweet Zensations.
Additional concessions will be available from Harrison High Band Boosters, which is hosting the event, supported by hundreds of volunteers and community contributions required to stage this event.

Parking will be available onsite at Harrison High School, located at 4500 Due West Road, Kennesaw, GA, 30152.

Winter guard is an indoor performance sport combining the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and props with dance and interpretive movement. Winter guards can be found in high schools, middle schools, some universities, and some independent organizations. Winter Guard International was founded in 1977 to draw together the growing winter guard activity, standardize rules, and provide leadership and guidance. Now an international organization, WGI conducts events in the US Canada, Belgium, Holland, Germany, England, Ireland, Korea, Japan, and Africa, culminating in a three-day world championship event.

“WGI Sport of the Arts continues to be a catalyst for extracurricular activity in most high schools with over 100,000 dedicated students wanting to participate in the marching arts in local, national, and international events,” said WGI Executive Director Ron Nankervis. “From a humble beginning 45 years ago with 34 groups, WGI has grown to now see more than 1,500 groups participating in 2022.”
