Parkview High's Khalil Shakur Wins State Wrestling Championship

Going into the evening, Khalil Shakur already was ranked No. 1 in the state, and when he hit the mat for the championship match Saturday, he made sure there was no doubt.

Shakur, a senior at Parkview High School and captain of the wrestling team, placed first in the final championship round -- making him the first state wrestling champion at the school since 2008, according to the team's Twitter account. 

After the win, Shakur tweeted: "Thanks to anyone that helped me win a state title this year, coaches, drill partners, friends. I couldn't have done it without you guys!!"

Weighing in at 160 pounds, the Class AAAAAA wrestler was one of three Parkview High wrestlers to place in the championship round, according to the team. Harrison Schmid, weighing 195 pounds, placed third. And, Andrew Webb at 126 pounds, placed sixth. 

Shakur also won the Gwinnett County championship this season, and surpassed the school's old takedown record of 252.

He plans to wrestle in college, as well.
