Gwinnett Receives $2.5 Million from State for Sugarloaf Extention

The Georgia Department of Transportation has contributed another $2.5 million toward the extension of Sugarloaf Parkway. After voting to accept the funding Tuesday, Gwinnett officials put out a press release detailng plans for the funding. It will be used to help fund the road extention from Campbell Road to State Route 316.

“The Board’s gratitude goes to the state DOT for contributing funds to this regionally significant project, Gwinnett Commission Board Chairman Charlotte Nash said in the release. "This is just another example of how our SPLOST funds have been able to leverage state and federal funding to help improve mobility."

According to the release, work on the current section is the last of four projects to extend Sugarloaf Parkway from State Route 20 south of Lawrenceville to State Route 316 in the Dacula area. The four-lane, divided, limited-access roadway will have interchanges at New Hope Road, Martins Chapel Road, Campbell Road and SR 316 when the project is complete. A total of $5 million had already been contributed to two other sections of the project by the state DOT. Officials said the extensions will improve mobility in the eastern part of the county, relieving congestion by providing alternative routes between South Lawrenceville/Grayson and the Dacula area. Once the second phase of the extention - from SR 316 to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard - is complete officials say access will be improved between the south Lawrenceville/Grayson area and the Suwanee/Sugar Hill/Buford area.

Construction of the final section is already underway and official anticipate the ramps on the south side of SR 316 to be open to traffic in August and the north side by the year's end.
