Here are the top five stories in Loganville-Grayson today:

  1. Grayson High School is currently ranked 5th in all Georgia high school football teams. Three-time defending state champ Buford is ranked first, followed by North Cobb, Warner Robins, and Langston Hughes. The Grayson Rams, who finished runner-up in 7A last year, will open Saturday against Marietta, in the Corky Kell Classic at Mercedes Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons.   2. The Miss Greater Atlanta Scholarship Competition is a preliminary competition for the Miss Georgia and Miss America competitions. This year, it was held at Grayson High School on Aug. 13. where Melanie Zhang from Gwinnett County took the title. The competition also released results from the Outstanding Teen competitions.   3. The Loganville City Council announced that the time for its Saturday, Aug. 20 meeting has been moved to 9 a.m. On the agenda tomorrow are some local gate repairs, transportation updates, the Main Street Director position, and a Town Green discussion, among other items.   4. The Piedmont Rockdale, a medical clinic just 20 minutes outside of Loganville, has completed $12.6 million expansion and renovation. The construction, which started in July 2021, created a new patient care area with 21 beds, updated the kitchen and medical floors, and replaced the roof of one of the buildings. The renovation also enabled Piedmont Rockdale to expand its capacity to 161 acute care beds. (Rockdale Newton Citizen)
  5. Georgia families are faced with losing free school lunches after receiving them for two years during the pandemic. The federal government program is reverting to pre-pandemic requirements where families must qualify for free lunch, which many people may not know. Through the Keep Kids Feds Act of 2022, the USDA can grant waivers related to summer food services programs through Sep. 30. Schools aren't the only place where kids are going to get their meals; food pantries in the area have seen a massive uptick in visitors during the pandemic. (CBS 46 News)
