Here are the top five stories today in Loganville-Grayson:

  1. Netherworld has been creating haunted houses in Gwinnett County for 26 seasons. The designers often find new and interesting ways to reuse old props and costumes. This year, the Netherworld team is creating several set pieces, like a giant tentacled monster, from scratch; co-owner Ben Armstrong said so many new monsters were made this year that he's lost count. 2. A one-cent special purpose local option sales tax has contributed around $700 million for Gwinnett County’s parks and greenspace since 1997, and a proposed renewal of the program will be on the ballot next month. If renewed, this tax would collect $1.35 billion over the next six years, which would fund recreation facilities, transportation projects, new police and public safety facilities and equipment, renovations for the county courthouse and animal shelter, and and senior services facilities. Cities within Gwinnett would receive 25 percent of the funds collected for municipal projects. (Gwinnett Citizen)
  3. In the wake of Hurricane Ian, many shelters across the South, including here in Georgia, have taken on additional pets that may have been housed in the path of the storm or surrendered by their evacuating owners. Prospective adopters can find a variety of cats and dogs available at the Gwinnett Animal Shelter, including fluffy Jones, sweet Jester, and bold Jaxton. (Subscription: Gwinnettdailypost.com)
  4. Loganville's annual autumn fest is scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 15. Over 175 vendors will be featured at the event as well as a food court, Kids Zone, and live entertainment. Guests can attend the fall festival from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and park at the health department, the Methodist and Baptist churches on Main Street, and City Hall. (Monroe Local)
  5. Looking for a new career opportunity that connects you with your community? Gwinnett and Walton counties are looking to hire for multiple full-time positions. Gwinnett County openings include a cook and administrative support, while Walton County is looking for a court clerk and an animal control officer.
