All Clear at Capitol Following Bomb Scare

A large backpack was left near the east side of the State Capitol, prompting a bomb squad call and the closure of two intersections.

MIDTOWN, GA -- Public safety officials say the State Capitol has been cleared of danger after a suspicious package was left outside the building Wednesday morning.

A large backpack was left outside the east side of the building, the Georgia State Patrol tells Patch. Witnesses reported seeing a white male leave the scene,

Officers from the Capitol Police, Atlanta police, and Georgia state troopers were joined by the Atlanta police bomb squad, the state patrol says. The bomb squad gave the all clear at approximately 11:35 a.m.

Police shut down the intersections of Mitchell and Washington streets and Memorial Drive and Capitol Avenue, according to state troopers.
