Atlanta's The Giving Kitchen Wins James Beard Humanitarian Award

The James Beard Awards, considered the Oscars of the culinary world, were presented Monday at a gala reception in Chicago.

ATLANTA -- The Giving Kitchen, an Atlanta-based non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance to food-service workers through financial support and a network of community resources, was named 2019 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year.

Chefs, restaurants and other establishments were honored with James Beard Awards at a ceremony in Chicago Monday. The awards are considered the Oscar Awards of the culinary industry.

The awards were presented in the restaurant, chef and restaurant design categories. Special achievement awards were presented for Lifetime Achievement, Design Icon, America's Classics and Humanitarian of the Year.

Giving Kitchen is a nonprofit organization that was inspired by an outpouring of support from the hospitality industry when Chef Ryan Hidinger was diagnosed with late-stage cancer in December 2012. The nonprofit is also associated with Staplehouse, a casual neighborhood restaurant in the Old Fourth Ward. Staplehouse, which has won multiple restaurant and dining awards, is a for-profit subsidiary of Giving Kitchen.
