Officer Shot At Dentist's Office Dies From Injuries
Henry County police officer Michael Smith died early Friday morning in Midtown Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital.

ATLANTA, GA --Officer Michael Smith, who was shot earlier this month at a Henry County dentist's office, died early Friday morning at Piedmont Hospital in Midtown Atlanta. According to the Henry County police department, Smith died around 4:30 am due to complications from injuries he sustained from a gunshot wound in the line of duty.
Smith was shot in the face on Dec. 6 after an altercation at a Jonesboro Road dental office. He was responding to reports of a man making a disturbance at Smile Creators in McDonough. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, employees of the business called 911 around 8 am. Smith arrived and made contact with the subject, identified as Dimaggio McNelly, 53, of McDonough.
The GBI said McNelly became combative and Smith deployed his Taser on him more than once. McNelly then lunged at Smith and, at some point during the struggle, one shot was fired, striking both McNelly and Smith. McNelly was pronounced dead on the scene.
