On Monday, September 16, Zocalo Mexican Kitchen & Cantina will host an all-day fiesta to celebrate one of Mexico’s most important holidays: Mexican Independence Day. Zocalo has been Midtown’s source for upscale Mexican comfort cuisine for more years than I can count.
Next week, in cities all over Mexico, locals will celebrate independence from the Spanish with fireworks, parades and traditional feasts. Here in Atlanta, chef Lucero Martinez-Obregon will prepare some of these authentic Mexican Independence Day traditions for Zocalo guests.
According to Zocalo, specials will include the famous chile en nogada, a poblano pepper stuffed with veal, tomatoes, onions and almonds served with a cinnamon-walnut sauce, pomegranate seeds, Mexican rice and refried beans. This dish proudly reflects the colors of the Mexican flag – green, white and red. Zocalo’s refreshing house margaritas, frozen or on the rocks, are just $5 all day. The banderita, from “bandera” (the Spanish word for flag,) includes lime, tequila blanco and sangrita. Guests can also sample from an extensive tequila list and shots of Espolon Reposado, with smooth notes of vanilla and mild spice, are $3 all day. Tecate beer will be available for just $2 and kids eat free all day.
