Decatur Man Charged in Monroe Shooting

Monroe PD still investigating shooting incident Thursday and car wreck on Nowell Street that followed.

Memerice Michael Lawson, 24, of 2034 Westley Chapel Road, Decatur was arrested Thursday following a report of shots fired and a subsequent car wreck on Nowell Street in Monroe. Lawson is charged with aggravated assault - gun, reckless conduct causing harm or endanger, firearms, possession by a convicted felon and firearms, discharge near highway/street. An arrest does not constitute a conviction.

According to an incident report from Monroe Police Department, when responding to a report of shots fired on Nowell Street at about 3:10 p.m. Thursday, officers found a Toyota with severe front end damage. The driver of that car, Brenda Tillman, 59, of Monroe, reported that she had been in a collision with a dark gray SUV that had then left the scene, heading in the direction of North Broad Street. Georgia State Patrol was called to work the car accident, as reported here, and MPD investigated the shooting.

Police report that an investigation revealed that there had been shots fired. Lawson was located and arrested on the firearms charges. At this time, however, there is no report of anyone being hit by any of the shots fired or hurt in the subsequent car wreck.

Tillman, (Tillmon according to the GSP report) the driver of the Toyota, was charged with not wearing a seatbelt and failing to maintain lane.
