Injured Marietta Sanitation Workers Identified

They were picking up trash Friday morning in the Allgood-Scufflegrit Road area.

Marietta police identified theΒ twoΒ sanitation workers injured Friday morningΒ when oxygen tanks explodedΒ in the back of a garbage truck in Marietta.

William Smith was taken toΒ WellStar Kennestone HospitalΒ withΒ severe injuries to both eyes, Officer David Baldwin said in an email.Β His condition is not known.Marvin Markham was treated on the scene forΒ facial lacerations, Baldwin said.

A woman in the 1400 block of Brentwood Drive died, and herΒ relatives threw away several oxygen tanks while cleaning her home, Officer David Baldwin with theΒ Marietta Police DepartmentΒ toldΒ WSB-TV.

The tanksΒ were in the trash thatΒ the crew picked up Friday morning, Baldwin said. When the crew crushed the garbage, the tanks exploded, which left one sanitation worker with severe injuries to his eyes and another with a deep laceration to the face, he said.
