Sex Offender Jailed for Allegedly Urinating on Relative

A convicted sex offender who'd failed to register with authorities since 2006 was captured Thursday, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to a Garrett Road residence around 3 p.m. where a 58-year-old man told them his roommate, who's been living with him for more than a year, had urinated on his left leg and foot during an argument, according to an incident report. 

The 24-year-old suspect was "found standing in the hallway wearing only a tank top t-shirt," a deputy wrote in the report.  The deputy put handcuffs on the man and gave him a towel to cover up.

Keith Level Smith was charged with simple battery under the Family Violence Act.

"Further investigation revealed that he had been convicted of a sex crime in Illinois and had registered as a sex offender with the Centreville (IL) Police in 2006, but he had not registered since then," a news release stated. "He has also been charged with failure to register as a sex offender here and is being held in the Oconee County Jail without bond pending a first appearance hearing."

Officials said they'd contacted Centreville Police, but Friday afternoon they didn't have details about the case that led to Smith's conviction.
