Here are the top four stories today in Roswell:
- Two arrests were made by the Roswell Police Department in an investigation into rental fraud were reported at a property in Roswell in June. This single report led detectives into a larger fraud scheme in which the pair is accused of operating shell companies, many of which, advertised business growth, development and coaching services. These shell companies are said to have attracted potential “clients" with promises to grow their brands, missions, and/or life goals. They then paid for goods and services that were never provided. More than a dozen victims have been identified thus far in the investigation. There is a combined monetary or property loss of over $1 million in this case. The Roswell Police Department is still looking into and believe that there are more victims in this scam. (thegeorgiasun.com)
- The four candidates who are running for the open Post 1 City Council seat met for a public forum at Sunny and Ranney in Downtown Roswell on October 13. The forum was sponsored by Roswell NEXT and the Roswell Moms Network. Sarah Beeson, Allen Sells, Jason Miller and Mulham Shbeib shared why they should be elected, outlined their ability to work with other councilmembers and discussed their ideas to increase the attraction of more businesses in the city. They were also asked to note factors they believe voters should consider when deciding on voting for or against the three bond questions and how they will vote on the referendums in the upcoming election. - The Roswell Recycling Center is reminding residents that the facility accepts liquefied cooking oils. Oils should not be poured down drains as it causes piping to clog and crack. As oil hardens over time, blockages build up and eventually pipes are destroyed. The oils will also severely damages the sewer system. Residents are urged to transfer used oils into reusable containers and to bring them to the recycling center. Cooking oils can be recycled and transformed into biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel fuels reduce greenhouse gases by lowering the levels of petroleum use and creates a better environment. (roswellgov.com)
- The Roswell Historical Society shared some Roswell business history with the community. Elizabeth Way Beauty Shop was opened in 1931 by Ollie Mae Thomas. This business was the oldest continuing business under one owner in the City of Roswell. When she retired in 1998, Thomas was honored by the Heart of Roswell Merchants Association.
