Atlanta Academy Partners with Second Helpings Atlanta on Georgia Gives Day

Students give back by making lunches for those in need.

From The Atlanta Academy: As an ongoing commitment to giving back, Atlanta Academy celebrates Georgia’s annual day of charitable giving, Georgia Gives Day, by teaming up with Second Helpings Atlanta on a school-wide community service project. Second Helpings Atlanta, a non-profit organization whose vision is to eliminate hunger in the Metropolitan Atlanta area by rescuing surplus food and delivering it to those in need, picked up brown bag lunches that the 275 students had built and assembled.

With a goal of providing 250 brown bag lunches, Atlanta Academy exceeded expectations by making more than 300 lunches for those in need. Students from preschool to fifth grade wrote personalized notes and decorated the bags that middle schoolers later stuffed with handmade sandwiches, healthy snacks and fruit. A team of Second Helpings Atlanta volunteer drivers will deliver the lunches to St. Francis Table.

“We are so proud of our students’ efforts this week for recognizing the need for giving to those who are less fortunate,” said Angela Naples, head of school. “We believe that instilling generosity and compassion in students at a young age fosters a sense of responsibility and awareness of those less fortunate.”
