Here are the top three stories in Roswell today:

  1. Roswell is continuing to celebrate and observe Black History Month with its Roswell Roots Festival. On February 2, Sandra Taylor and Charles Grogan, Roswell’s Black historian, recalled life in segregated Roswell at the Roswell Public Library. They gave first-hand recollections of what it was like growing up in the previously segregated town. This intimate conversation was presented by the Roswell Historical Society Archivist Elaine DeNiro. Even more ancient history that was passed down through oral tradition was also shared. (appenmedia.com)
  2. On February 9, Roswell Police Chief James W. Conroy announced a new public comment portal. This portal is to be used to get feedback on the Roswell PDs compliance with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®). There are 395 standards that the department has to adhere to in order to gain accredited status. The process of accreditation is meant to "facilitate continuous improvement and promote professional excellence within the Roswell Police Department." A list of these standards are located at the Roswell Police Department. The portal will be open until April 7. (facebook.com)
  3. An employee at the Metro PCS store in Roswell reported that a customer attempted to take an iPhone that was on the counter on January 30. They told police that the suspect came in to inquire about the new iPhone 14 Plus. While the employee wasn't looking the supposed-to-be-customer snatched the phone and ran towards the door. However, the employee ran after him and was able to trip him outside the store and take the phone. The thief took off hurriedly in a black Jeep. (appenmedia.com)

The Winter Cup competition will take place from February 24 through February 26 in Louisville, Kentucky. This competition qualifies participants to be able to compete in the 2023 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Congratulations to RMGT members Maxim Bereznev, Anthony Koppie and Chase Davenport-Mills. • Roswell Fire Department: Crew members from Roswell's Engine 24 responded to a resident's report of strange flutter-like sounds coming from above the basement ceiling. After a short investigation, the cause of the strange sounds were found. It turned out to be the family’s Conure Bird named Balwal. After a flight around the house, the bird became trapped between the basement ceiling and the floor above. Firefighters were able to remove the bird from the space in which it was trapped and was returned safely to its family. (Roswell Fire Department via Instagram)
