Here are the top stories today in Roswell:

  1. The Hembree Farmhouse in Roswell, one of the oldest houses in Fulton County, was recently purchased for $125,000. The new owners, however, will have to adhere to a strict preservation agreement. The property was put on the market by the Roswell Historical Society and and Georgia Trust. The sale of the property was orchestrated through the Georgia Trust’s Revolving Fund program. Georgia Trust is an organization that obtains historic properties through purchase or by donation. They then market historical properties to owners who are interested in historic homes and their preservation. They then work with new owners to create a plan for rehabilitation and preservation of the property. (saportareport.com)
  2. Mayors and representatives of 11 out of 15 Fulton County cities held a second town hall meeting on September 28 at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park. Mayors and city officials again discussed the distribution of the countywide Local Option Sales Tax (LOST). The cities are vying against Fulton County's bid to keep more than the 5% share it has been getting over the past ten years. Per the cities in the county, the proposal will cost cities tens of millions of dollars they need to pay for local services without raising property taxes. Representatives answered questions on the proposed distribution negotiations with Fulton County officials. North Fulton officials from Alpharetta, John's Creek, Milton, and Sandy Springs attended. The City of Roswell did not attend this second town hall. The county and its 15 cities renegotiate how money collected from LOST is distributed. Mediation sessions between the county and cities will continue. (appenmedia.com)
  3. The Roswell Historical Society is continuing its goal to preserve and restore 87 unmarked graves located in historical cemeteries in Roswell. The gravesites were identified by research and ground penetrating radar. The historical society will be raising money for this cause by selling tickets to a performance of “Beyond My Stone.” The event will take place on Saturday, October 22 at the Pleasant Hill Historical Cemetery. All proceeds will go toward purchasing markers for unmarked burial sites. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  4. The Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs department is looking for partners in the community to participate in the Youth Day Celebration. Youth Day is Roswell's observation and celebration of Arts and Humanities Month. It will have an Art Block at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. It needs people to help create "make-and-take" crafts for the event. If your interested with help creating crafts for Art Block, please reach out to the Cultural Arts Department for more information. 5. On Friday morning Gov. Kemp stated that "Georgia dodged a bullet." Hurricane Ian changed course and moved east. This resulted in mild effects and damage from the storm. Parts of the Georgia coasts received mild winds and minimal flooding. The governor said his attention is now on helping those in Florida who were devastated by the storm. (11Alive.com WXIA)
