Here are the top four stories in Roswell today:
- The Roswell Fire Department had to contend with a fire at the Rosemont Apartment complex in Roswell on Saturday evening. Twenty-two residents were displaced after a fire broke out in a 10-unit apartment building in the community. The fire department received a call that reported smoke and fire emitting from a dryer inside an apartment unit. Four units sustained significant damage, but no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is partnering with the property management to help those residents who are currently displaced by this fire. (thegeorgiasun.com)
- There is a proposal to build a medical center near GA-400 at Raintree Drive and Market Boulevard in Roswell. The center will be built on an estimated 12 acres and is planned to also include supporting facilities. This project will take place along a stream near the Chattahoochee River located in the Upper Chattahoochee Watershed. Therefore, the Environmental Protection Division Watershed Protection Branch is offering residents the opportunity to comment on this plan for the development of Roswell Riverwalk Medical Center. The EPD is taking comment by phone or email or you can schedule an appointment to review the proposals. (Paywall: ajc.com)
- Candidates for Roswell City Council will hold their first debate today. Four candidates will be vying for the City Council Post 1 seat. The debate will take place at the Roswell Community Masjid. Reverend Dr. Strickland of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church will moderate the event. The debate will be broadcasted live and can be viewed online. (twitter.com)
- Joel Floyd is the founder of English for a Lifetime Language Institute. The school advertises that it "takes a holistic approach to teaching English as a second language, regardless of educational background or social status." English for a Lifetime Language Institute began in Doraville in 2012 and shortly moved to Peachtree Corners. The initial goal was to address the language barrier between immigrant adults and their children who face challenges with learning English. Floyd opened a second location in Roswell in May. There are now about 60 students enrolled at the Roswell location. In August, the Roswell location was awarded $10,000 from NAV Technologies. These funds are to establish a computer lab, purchase classroom furniture and hire a lead teacher and community marketing agent. The institute offers six levels of 16-week long courses of academic and vocational English. (appenmedia.com)
