Fulton Names Assistant Superintendent Of Innovative Programs

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- The Fulton County School Board last week approved Dr. Doannie Tran to become the district’s new assistant superintendent of innovative programs. He is currently the assistant superintendent for academics and professional learning for Boston Public Schools, and will begin his new role in Fulton County in October.

Dr. Tran will manage the process for Fulton’s new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) high schools and will lead a comprehensive review of the district’s magnet strategy. He also will oversee Fulton’s organizational design thinking capacity, encouraging innovation and new ideas to achieve better outcomes for students.

“I am extremely pleased that we have selected an experienced leader with a proven track record of success in the classroom as well as in private business,” said Fulton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose. “Throughout his career in education, Dr. Tran has focused on innovation, with a commitment to delivering results. We look forward to the wealth of knowledge and varied experiences he will bring to Fulton County Schools.”

A former Teach for America middle and high school science teacher in California and Boston, Dr. Tran has spent more than 15 years in education. He is a graduate of Fulton’s North Springs Charter High School and the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in chemistry as a Foundation Fellow. He later joined the TFA staff and launched the organization’s Massachusetts region, where he built their partnership with Boston University and significantly improved their effectiveness, satisfaction and teacher retention.

In 2015, Dr. Tran earned a doctorate in educational leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As a graduate student, he trained extensively in design thinking and Lean Startup methodologies and was sponsored as an entrepreneur-in-residence at NewSchools Venture Fund. He then joined the leadership team of Boston Public Schools as an assistant superintendent. In that role, he focused on ensuring that every educator had high-quality curricular options and was competent in evidence-based instructional practices.

Dr. Tran is married to Holly Gooding, an adolescent medicine physician. They have two children.
