Here are the top five stories in Roswell today:
- Roswell is about to go into its 24th year of having the beloved Roswell Ghost Tour —the one-mile tour walks through Roswell's haunted history. Bulloch Hall, Barrington Hall, and Founders Cemetery are some of the visited stops on the tour. Haunted buildings that are presently being used by businesses are noted. Shane Pittman, the lead investigator for the Netflix series “28 Days Haunted," has even visited the Roswell Ghost Tour. Although the Halloween season has come to a close, you can still experience the tour every Friday and Saturday throughout the year, just as long there are at least six people signed up. - Properties that lie within in the Roswell Historic District are classified into five classifications that determine whether they contribute to or detract from the historic character of the district. The Roswell City Council agreed to a $60,500 contract with Lumenor to update the Historic Properties Map, as they have not been updated since data from 2000-2001. Several properties that were added to the Historic District in 2013 will be included with this update. The Historic District map refresh will account for any changes that have occurred since the last update twenty years ago, and will make the classification language align with the system that is preferred by the State Historic Preservation Office. - An airplane crashed in Alpharetta on Big Creek Greenway on Monday, October 31. A twin-engine Beechcraft G58 crashed in Rock Mill Park in Alpharetta while on its way to the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Local responders and the The Federal Aviation Administration were onsite. At least two passengers were confirmed to be onboard at the time of the crash. Officials are still searching for any additional passengers. One person is confirmed dead. The National Transportation Safety Board is to investigate the accident. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- The Roswell-Alpharetta Mountain Biking Organization (RAMBO) inquired with the City of Roswell earlier in the year about expanding the pump track areas at Big Creek Park on Old Alabama Road. The pump track mountain bike area has various line choices, large rollers and jumps in which beginner riders can practice different obstacles that may be found on the larger mountain bike trails. RAMBO is looking to expand the current pump track area with new features and activities for beginner riders. It wants to add new dirt rollers, berms, boulders bridges, skinnies and ladders to the area. Per RAMBO’s agreement with the city, alterations to the trail or any improvements, must be approved by the Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department Director. Tentative approval was given by the director, pending review by the Recreation Commission. Funds for these changes will come from RAMBO, as well as from grants and donations. (Paywall: ajc.com)
- The 21 new full-time fire captains were officially welcomed and went through orientation last week. They also met with and were welcomed by Mayor Kurt Wilson, Councilmember Lee Hills and City Administrator Randy Knighton. As part of the orientation, the new hires also met with members from city's Human Resources Department, IT Division, and a representative of the Georgia Firefighters Pension Fund. The new chiefs got fitted for their turnout gear and were issued uniforms. (facebook.com)
