Holcomb Bridge Middle Holds First 'Heritage Day'
The special school day celebrated Georgia history.
Why were buffalo and Civil War re-enactment actors at Holcomb Bridge Middle School recently? These otherwise unexpected guests—and others—were part of the first Georgia Heritage Day hosted by the middle school.
Eighth grade students spent a full day of immersion with hands-on, experiential activities to learn about and celebrate Georgia history.
Inspired by teachers Elizabeth McMahon and Jennifer Foil, the teaching staff, administration and PTA worked quickly and tirelessly to cover all the bases for a well-orchestrated day that rotated students through seven stations, opening their eyes to history in a highly engaging way. Students made their own pottery; picked cotton; participated in the music and dances from the Cherokee and Creek cultures; learned about the role buffalo played; shouted the ‘rebel yell’ and Union ‘hurrah’; learned about the history of Coke and had ‘coke floats’; made homemade butter and fried apple pies; dressed up in clothes from the period and more.

"This school does nothing half-way," commented one parent volunteer. "I am so impressed with the passion and commitment of these teachers to go so far over and above to create this day for students!"
Principal Joy Schroerlucke shared the enthusiasm.

Schroerlucke, who was recently named the Georgia Northeast Learning Community ‘Principal of the Year’ said, "Being a world-class school means bringing world-class instruction to our students. I couldn’t be more proud of my staff, students and this community."
The event was also attended by several of the school’s business partners, called the ‘Friends of Holcomb Bridge.'
"I had no idea activities of this caliber were taking place here in our own neighborhood," said Jennifer Raggi from North Atlanta Urgent Care.
Based on its resounding success, the school plans to host the Georgia Heritage Day event next year.
