UPDATE: Icy Weather Closes Schools and Equals Traffic Nightmare

Fulton County Schools closed, Thursday, Dec.16, and Roswell emergency services urge everyone to stay off the roads until temps rise mid-morning.

Below freezing temperatures and icy precipitation have caused roads in Roswell to become extremely dangerous and has the Fulton County School System deciding to cancel schools, Thursday, Dec. 16.

Just before 5 p.m., on Wednesday, the and other emergency services throughout the metro area began advising residents to stay off the roads to avoid black ice if at all possible. Unfortunately, the warnings came just in time for rush hour traffic. Over 100 accidents were reported that night, according to Roswell Public Information Officer, James McGee.

A sleet/snow mix Wednesday afternoon and temperatures slipping into the upper 20's have combined to cause plenty of traffic accidents. The Roswell Emergency Management System released this list of still icy roads early Thursday morning: Mountain Park at 92; Houze Way between Houze Road & Crabapple; Old Alabama at Market Boulevard; Riverside at Old Alabama; Steeplechase Drive closed at Winnmark; Steeplechase is very icy Hembree Rd; east bound at Crabapple closed; Martins Landing Drive at Martin Road. Beware of any bridges or overpasses, as they are likely to be covered in patchy ice, the fire department reminds people.

City staff, which has canceled all Recreation and Parks activities until noon Thursday, has said that sand trucks are out attempting to sand and salt the roads. But below freezing temperatures for most of the night and an inability to thaw will mean traffic is likely to be just as bad Thursday morning as it was Wednesday.

The National Weather Service calls for freezing rain and sleet throughout Wednesday night, with more rain likely Thursday.
