Here are the top five stories in Roswell today:
- A Roswell restaurant owner has been accused of sexual crimes against two minors. An investigation began after Milton High School officials reached out to the department regarding the possibility of "inappropriate behavior involving minors" in January. After a month long investigation, Roswell Police had enough evidence to charge the owner with solicitation of sodomy with a minor, cruelty to children, furnishing obscene material to a minor, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Both victims were 16 years old. The accused was arrested on February 23 and transported to the Fulton County Jail. He bonded out of jail February 25. (fox5atlanta.com)
- The Roswell Police Department has been receiving high praises its status of being fully staffed. It's a first for the department in two decades. Roswell Police Chief James Conroy made hiring a top priority by hiring 36 officers in 2022. Twenty-three of those officers had prior experience at other agencies around the nation. Last year the City Council introduced their “Best in Class” pay plan. This gave a 20% increase to the salaries of starting positions within the department. In addition the focus on hiring and the increase in pay, Councilmember Lee Hills also attributes this accomplishment to leadership. “We have a stellar leadership group in our public safety department,” Hills expressed. Also, from the approval of the $52 million public safety bond, the city will allocate half of those funds for new public safety headquarters. (WSB Atlanta)
- A 63-year-old Milton resident was revived after experiencing cardiac arrest while at a soccer practice at Roswell Area Park on February 4. A fellow player and a retired fire chief were nearby and proceeded to perform CPR on him. CPR wasn't rendering any changes, therefore pair began to inspect the park’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Meanwhile, Jeff Freemyer, a board member of the soccer club FC Georgia United, called 911 for help. An emergency physician was able to administer the AED. The man was able to be revived and was transported to the hospital where he was able to recover. He expressed his thankfulness that the AED was charged and ready for use. Jeffrey Leatherman, the Recreation and Parks Department Director said that Roswell has 31 AEDs located throughout the city's parks, rec centers, and art centers. (appenmedia.com)
- Roswell's designer home furnishings and décor store, Sunny & Ranney, was featured by Fox 5 Atlanta not only for the items they have to sell, but for the reason behind their business. All of the proceeds from their sales goes to the Atlanta-based charity Sunshine on a Ranney Day. This nonprofit does bedroom, bathroom, and therapy room makeovers for children with special needs. The charity was created by Peter and Holly Ranney in 2012 after being inspired by a sermon at church. Since that time they have helped approximately 17,000 children and have put their mission to "bring sunshine" to local families into action. (fox5atlanta.com)
- On February 14, a Roswell resident reported to police that she received a call from someone claiming to be a “Lieutenant Hoarn.” The caller told the woman that a warrant for her arrest was issued by the Fulton County Sherriff’s Department for not attending jury duty. She was then told that she had to pay $5,000 to clear the warrant and to deposit the money in an account for Fulton County. The resident went to the Rowell Police Department to find out information about her warrant. The Roswell Police Department confirmed that she had no active warrants. Officers had her call the number back, the person who answered swore then hung up the phone. The resident was told by police to block future phone calls from that number and to not deposit any money into the account. (appenmedia.com)
