Here are the top four stories in Roswell today:

  1. A $45,300 contract between the City of Roswell and the city’s on-call consultant, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, was approved. City council approved the design of the Ga. 140 Landscaped Median Islands project. Based on the East Roswell Economic Action Committee's recommendations, the city allocated $540,000 towards the installation of landscape median islands along the corridor of Ga. 140/Holcomb Bridge Road between Old Alabama Road and Nesbit Ferry Road The project will include the engineering, landscape design, and the construction plans for three medians. The GA-DOT offered opinions on which of nine locations are potentially feasible for the project. The city also received recommendations from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration to install raised medians in high pedestrian and traffic areas. (Paywall:ajc.com)
  2. A Roswell man received a 17-year sentence for 2012 sex crimes against a 13-year-old girl. The 39- year old man concealed a 13-year-old girl in his Roswell apartment for three weeks after responding to a social media post from the teenager stating that she wanted to run away. He also produced explicit videos with her. He subsequently was on the run from from law enforcement after bonding out of jail and fleeing the state. He was finally captured in 2019. The man was sentenced for producing child pornography. His sentence will be followed by supervised release for life. (thegeorgiasun.com)
  3. There are still 20 occupied units and nine tenants still have yet to find a relocation solution at the Groveway Apartments. The community is located at 199 Grove Way in Roswell. The remaining residents, however, are no longer being given a definitive date to vacate the property. The building was condemned in the spring and there are areas of the building that are currently being held up by metal supports. A ceiling collapsed in one of the units earlier this month. “The remaining have either moved out or are in the process of finalizing paperwork, inspections, etc.,” said Karen Parrish, the chairwoman of the Housing Authority of Roswell. The Housing Authority stated that there are 10 scheduled move-outs over the next 10 days. (appenmedia.com)
  4. Mayor Kurt Wilson and the City Council gave recognition to Technical Sergeant Eugene Fawcett. He was honored at the council meeting on Monday as an "Esteemed Veteran of Roswell." Fawcett joined the US Army in 1943 and was soon promoted to corporal. He served in Europe as relief and replacements after the invasion of D-Day in France and continued service in the Pacific. Technical Sergeant Eugene Fawcett was Honorably Discharged from service on February 13, 1946. He received numerous medals and honors from the US Army. (facebook.com)
