Georgia Elections 2018: McBath Declares Victory Over Handel

Unofficial results show Lucy McBath has a 3,000-vote lead over incumbent Rep. Karen Handel, who has not conceded the race.

ATLANTA, GA — The challenger in Georgia's 6th Congressional District election is declaring victory in her defeat of an incumbent Republican by a razor thin margin. Lucy McBath said he was "honored" to serve residents of the district after a hard-fought race.

Unofficial results show McBath leading with 159,268 votes to Rep. Karen Handel's 156,396 votes with 100 percent of the precincts reporting. The 6th Congressional District includes all of North Fulton County and parts of DeKalb and Cobb counties.

"The voters responded to my commitment to put aside partisan fights for the good of the American people," McBath said in her statement. She added she was looking forward to serving all families in the District.

However, Handel has not conceded the race and Patch has reached out to the Congresswoman's campaign for a comment on these latest developments.

"Given the close results of our race, and the fact that the official results at this time are within the 1-percent threshold where a recount is possible, we believe it is prudent to review and assess all data before making additional actions or statements," campaign spokesperson Charlie Harper said.

Georgia's historic governor's race remained too close to call as votes continued to be counted early Wednesday morning. Republican Brian Kemp's lead over Democrat Stacey Abrams tightened as Tuesday night stretched into Wednesday. Final results are not expected to come in until possibly Thursday when absentee ballots are counted. As of 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, about 64,000 votes separated Kemp and Abrams in the race to succeed Nathan Deal, unofficial results show.

Unofficial results will be certified later in the week. Return to Patch for updates to the results in these three races.
