Here are the top stories in Roswell today:

  1. Mimosa Hall was acknowledged by the Fulton County Citizens Commission on the Environment (FCCCE) with the 2022 Environmental Award. Mimosa Hall received this achievement for its solar roof project. The City of Roswell purchased the historic nine-acre property in 2017. Since that time, it has worked with the Friends of Mimosa Hall and Gardens to make many improvements to the estate. The integrated solar roof is equipped with the most up-to-date battery technology from Sonnen, Inc. This new solar paneled roof is foreseen to generate about 103% of the hall's electricity. The FCCCE gives its awards to projects, programs, community organizations, and individuals in Fulton County that champions and promote environmentally sound practices. The Chair of the Environmental Committee for Friends of Mimosa Hall & Gardens, Kelly Callen, expressed that, “We look forward to celebrating Mimosa Hall, which is 181 years old, becoming the ‘Oldest Net Zero Home in the Country’ once certification is completed soon." 2. The Roswell City Council voted unanimously to authorize the use of eminent domain to take possession of 50 Maple St. for fee simple right of way and another 2,947.41 square feet for a temporary easement for construction of the project. The entire property is a total of 1,368 square feet. Mayor Kurt Wilson stated that an independent investigation was made by the Jarrard & Davis law firm that found that one of the reasons that led to delays and multi-million-dollar cash settlements regarding the Oxbo Road project was the city’s “longstanding inability to use eminent domain.” Per City Attorney, David Davidson's recollection, the city's last time authorizing or contemplating the use of eminent domain was in 2008. 3. Corporal Robert E. Cargill, a World War II Veteran, was recognized as an Esteemed Veteran of Roswell. Corporal Cargill received his honors and proclamation at a special outing to the Vickery Rose Retirement Resort on Tuesday, November 1. The visit by Mayor Kurt Wilson and the council not only presented Corporal Cargill with this prestigious honor, but also helped celebrate his upcoming 100th birthday.
  4. An Air Travel Alert was recently announced by Georgia's Department of Driver Services (DDS). The department stated that Georgia residents will need to get an updated driver's license with either a black or gold star in the upper right-hand corner of their driver's license in order to travel on commercial planes and/or enter federal or military buildings. Residents who don't already have one of these new licenses will have until May 3, 2023 to get theirs updated. DDS has been issuing these licenses since 2012 in order to meet federal standards.
