Most Fulton Seniors Have Good Quality of Life According to State of Seniors Survey
Nearly 1,000 surveys completed from April 26 to May 16.

Preliminary findings of a Fulton County State of Seniors Survey indicate that many Fulton seniors are enjoying a moderate to high quality of life; however, gaps remain for those with limited incomes and support.
The survey is being conducted by Fulton County in collaboration with the A.L. Burruss Institute of Public Service and Research utilizing a Random Digit Dial Survey and an online survey of adults ages 55 years and above living in Fulton County.
Initial findings of the survey from analysis of nearly 1,000 responses received between April 26 and May 16 found that many adults living in Fulton County were able to meet their daily living expenses; however, there were individuals who are unable to pay for energy/utilities (26 percent) or food (nine percent). Other preliminary findings indicated the following:

Economics
- Nine percent of respondents reported skipping meals due to a lack of money
- 10 percent are in need, but are unable to afford medical care
- 21 percent reported difficulties paying for prescription medications
Health Care

- 20 percent have experienced depression in the past year
- 22 percent have difficulty performing routine housework
Quality of Life
- 74 percent reported not having a grocery store within walking distance
- 11 percent are currently raising grandchildren or children of other family members
Elder Abuse and Discrimination
- 26 percent observed and 30 percent experienced discrimination based on age
- 27 percent are employed full or part time
- The most frequently reported source of discrimination was employers (63 percent)
- 37 percent of respondents did not know who to contact to report elder abuse
Survey respondents were 45 percent male and 55 percent female with 75 percent of them planning to retire in Fulton County. Their ages ranged from 55-years-old to 101-years-old. Fifty-three percent were ages 55-64 and 47 percent were ages 65 plus. The average length of their residency in Fulton County is 20 years.
Once the final survey results are reported, the findings will be used by the Fulton County Office of Aging to determine strategic planning goals that support aging in place. Future planning will focus on improving the ability of seniors to age in place, strengthening the support systems of seniors who are isolated and assisting those in need of appropriate medical care and assistance with daily living activities.
