Here are the top three stories today in Roswell:

  1. The 15 cities in Fulton County want an arbitrator to now be involved in the disagreement with Fulton County over Local Option Sales Tax revenue. The arbitration would be open to the public and would provide a greater understanding to the residents of Fulton County, says Mayor Rusty Paul of Sandy Springs. The argument arose after Fulton County stated that it wanted a larger share of LOST revenue. Officials from the county argue that the increase would help improve the court system, jails, mental health services, etc. The cities in the county say that they use the money for fire, police and other services. The mayors caution that the redirection of these funds to the county would cause property taxes to be raised. There has been ongoing mediation between the opposing parties, but the process has been out of the public's eye. The Sandy Springs mayor advises that it's possible that mediation will continue instead of arbitration be granted. (Paywall: ajc.com)
  2. Biggby Coffee, a national coffeehouse chain headquartered in Lansing, Michigan, opened its first location in Georgia in Roswell on October 25. Daniel and Laura Hinchee own and operate this first Georgia franchise. The couple left their full-time jobs in health care to undertake this endeavor. Before Tuesday's grand opening, the Hinchees sponsored local events in the community to promote their products and to begin to build a relationship with the community. Biggby Coffee serves different forms and an array of coffee flavors. Teas, milkshakes, smoothies and a small food items like breakfast sandwiches and assorted treats are also served. 3. Roswell's Dia de Meurtos Festival will take place on Saturday, October 29. There will be many ways to learn about, honor and celebrate this traditional Mexican holiday. There will be various forms of entertainment such as a Mexican ballet group, street performers, face painting and a mariachi band. Traditional Mexican cuisine will be exhibited by local vendors and chefs. In observance of the holiday, festival-goers are encouraged to bring a copy of a photo or a small keepsake of a loved one to place at the Ofrenda, which is a traditional Mexican altar that honors loved ones who have passed away. You can also dress up to celebrate, as there will be a costume contest with cash prizes for winners. The festival will take place at Roswell City Hall. (secretatlanta.co)
