Here are the top stories in Roswell today:
- City council members are contemplating new requirements for townhomes are to be built. One of the changes is that garages in newly built townhomes be located in the rear of the units instead of the front. Another requirement they are considering is to decrease the number of "allowable contiguous" townhomes from eight to four. Most councilmembers say that these changes will make future townhomes more alluring than the current townhome designs in the city. Councilwoman Beeson disagrees. She believes these changes will increase housing costs and make purchases more difficult for first-time homebuyers. (Paywall: ajc.com)
- Roswell Police recently announced that they currently have 160 officers employed in the department. There are no vacant positions among the unit. This is an excellent start to 2023. This is the first time in two decades that the Roswell PD is fully staffed. When Chief James Conroy began as Police Chief in 2019, there were numerous voids in the department. Hiring officers and retaining them was his top priority. The chief also worked to increase the salary of existing officers by 20 percent. Starting salaries were also raised by 20 percent across the board for all positions. (appenmedia.com)
- Councilmember Christine Hall was selected to be Mayor Pro Tem of the Council by fellow councilmembers through a unanimous vote. This election was made at the recent Mayor and Council Meeting on January 10. The term of this position is one year, and she will act on the mayor's behalf in his absence. The former Mayor Pro Tem, Michael Palermo, nominated Christine Hall. Councilmember Lee Hills seconded the nomination. (roswellgov.com)
