Here are the top five stories in Roswell today:
- There are various nonprofits in Roswell that could use volunteers, especially during this holiday season. If you’re looking for opportunities to volunteer and do service work, the city has a central resource to find local organizations who are in need. The Volunteer Roswell webpage provides a list of different ways to help that are posted by nonprofit partners and the City of Roswell. Tis' the season of giving, and in preparation of #GivingTuesday on November 29, the community is urged to take advantage of chances to give back. Visit the city's webpage to find chances to provide aid during this time of year gratefulness and giving. (facebook.com)
- Pleasant Hill Church, a historically Black church that was founded by slaves, celebrated its 175th anniversary on Sunday, November 13. The church was founded by two enslaved brothers, Burl and Alex Hembree, in 1847. They were enslaved by the Hembree family. There was a special service on Sunday that commemorated this historical milestone. Officials from the city and Mayor Kurt Wilson were in attendance. The pastor of Pleasant Hill Church, Reverend Dr. Sabin Strickland, grew up across the street from the current location of the church and began pastoring there in 1996. The church moved to its current location on Pleasant Hill Street in 1922. “It’s certainly something to be a part of a ministry that goes back so far,” Pastor Strickland said of the church. The almost 650 member congregation still feels and connects to the church's deep history. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- A local business that is located on the Roswell-Alpharetta boarder was recently burglarized and reported to police. Thieves broke into North Fulton Metals on N. Fulton Industrial Blvd. in Alpharetta and stole catalytic converters from the warehouse. The Alpharetta Police Department believe the theft occurred between October 29 and October 31. The department reports that the thieves cut four holes into the wall of the warehouse to gain entry into the establishment. Eight catalytic converters were stolen from the premises. The owners do not know who could have committed this crime, but stated that another one of their warehouses in College Park was also burglarized in a similar way. Security camera footage is said to have recorded the incident, but was not shared with the Alpharetta PD when the report was made. (appenmedia.com)
- Here's another reminder that the residential drop off location at the the city’s Solid Waste Transfer Station will be closed until January 3 for construction upgrades. The site is located at 1802 Hembree Rd. and is normally available for residents of Roswell to dispose of extra garbage and/or bulky items. Now they will have to make other plans to do so. In the meantime, Roswell’s large item pickup program is available to schedule the collection of these types of items. A pick up can be scheduled with the city and the items will be collected on your regular curbside sanitation collection days. The city will not accept chemicals or construction/demolition debris. The Solid Waste Customer Service line is open to answer any questions or concerns. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- The Roswell Police are searching for a 64-year-old Indian male who went missing near Riverside Road and Dogwood Road in Roswell. He was last seen on Friday, November 11 around 9:00 PM after being medically evaluated by an ambulance and then released. He was wearing a blue Adidas jacket with white stripes on the front and the word "France" on the back in white, black pants and gray and white sneakers. The elderly man may be confused as he suffers from dementia. The police department reported him still missing on the evening of Sunday, November 13. The Roswell PD asked to be contacted if you happen to encounter this described individual. (facebook.com)
