Here are the top five stories in Roswell today:

  1. At the Roswell City Council meeting on July 11 two new members of the Planning Commission — Carol Williams and Jason Frazier — were appointed. They were appointed by Mayor Kurt Wilson with their families in attendance. (facebook.com)
  2. A bond referendum has been approved by the city council for the November ballot. Voters will make a decision on a $107.6 million bond for Recreation & Parks, bike/pedestrian improvements and sidewalks; a $52 million bond for a new police and fire headquarters and new fire stations throughout Roswell; and a $20 million bond for a new parking deck in historic downtown Roswell. So, get ready to vote on these referendums in November, as they will be on the ballot. (City of Roswell, Georgia Government via Facebook)
  3. Metro Atlanta schools are facing a teacher shortage as the beginning of the school year fast approaches. Fulton County, as well as other counties like Gwinnett and DeKalb, are still short on staff. Fulton County Schools currently has 307 vacancies that it is struggling to fill before school begins in three weeks. Fulton County Schools held a virtual job fair on July 12. The school district still has openings to fill and is urging residents to apply. (CBS 46 News)
  4. A unanimous vote was made from the Alpharetta City Council to end the glass recycling contract with Republic Services. "We've attempted to work with (Republic Services) to address the issue of glass collection, and I'm just going to be perfectly blunt: Republic has failed in their contractual obligations to pick up glass on a weekly basis throughout the city,” said Councilman Doug DeRito. Alternative solutions for glass collection are being considered and reviewed. (appenmedia.com)
  5. Pleasant Hill Street at Oxbo Road will be closed today and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the installation of an insertion valve. There will be a detour route in place, but still be prepared for delays in the area. (facebook.com)

  • Sweet Apple PTO: "Write One For The Wolf" (WOFTW) is the Sweet Apples PTO’s primary tax-deductible fundraiser for the school year. The 2022-2023 campaign is now accepting donations, which will help bridge the gap between the limited funding and programs that Sweet Apple is able to provide.   • City of Roswell, Georgia Government: At the July 11 City Council meeting, Captain Steven E. Haynes was honored by Mayor Kurt Wilson and members of the Roswell City Council as an esteemed veteran of Roswell.   • Peachtree Corners is planning a joint back-to-school event with the Town Center playground grand opening. The event will be held on Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. (newsbreak.com)
  • An acoustic experience with Anna LaPrad, a singer and songwriter from Nashville, along with other musicians, will take place Aug. 14 at Osteria Mattone on Canton Street. Attendees will also get a chance to chat with Anna after the show. (brainstorm.com)
