Here are the top three stories today in Roswell:
- Researchers at Georgia State University are conducting an investigation to see which neighborhoods in north Georgia have high levels of radon gas. Radon is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas that is found in the soil. It's a natural element that enters your home through cracks and crevices. Danielle Pen᷉a is a realtor and a resident of Roswell who bought her home last year. She recommends a radon test to all of her clients, and had the home she purchased tested as well. Her report recorded radon levels three times more than a limit that's safe and healthy. Dr. Pamela Gore, a professor of geology at Georgia Perimeter, says that "we breathe low levels of radon every day but when gas is trapped in home basements and crawlspaces, radon levels can become dangerously high." The only way to know what radon levels are for a property is to test. Scientists at Georgia State are working to see if homes that are built near certain types of rock are at higher risk for developing higher radon gas levels. (wsbtv.com)
- At the Roswell City Council meeting on February 13, numerous residents attended to express their disapproval of a rezoning request. The rezoning proposal will increase the number of households on a 5.7-acre parcel of land on Eves Circle. Per the request of developers, the topic of rezoning has been deferred until a meeting on March 13. In unity, residents wore red shirts to demonstrate their resistance to the rezoning as well as the approved deferment. The said lot only has one home on the site and is currently underdeveloped. The developer, AEC Inc., is looking for rezoning approval to allow 11 residential lots to be built. (appenmedia.com)
- Commander Lester W. Tucker is the most recent citizen to be declared an Esteemed Veteran of Roswell. He spent eight years of active duty with the U.S. Navy, and served all over the world. In 1973, then-Lieutenant Tucker and his crew were chosen to ferry a number of the American POWs who were released as part of “Operation Homecoming” after being held captive in Vietnam. Commander Tucker also spent 12 years flying in the Naval Reserves. He retired and received the National Defense Medal in 1992. He and his wife have been residents of Roswell since 1976.
