Here are the top four stories in Roswell today:

  1. Joe Barry Carroll is a retired NBA All Star and he is also an accomplished artist. On February 23, Carroll gave an artist talk at Roswell's Mimosa Hall and spoke about his childhood as well as the decade he spent in NBA. The self-taught artist has been painting for the past eight years, and has always been drawn to art. In addition to painting, Carroll still gives back to the sports world by providing wealth advisement to professional athletes. He is also an author, publisher and humanitarian. These aspects of his life are translated into his artwork and his series of paintings are on display at Mimosa Hall. His current exhibit, “My View from Seven Feet,” will be presented at the hall until March 28. (appenmedia.com)
  2. The season of summer will be here before we know it and the City of Roswell wants parents to be prepared. It is offering a variation of different camps that will spark numerous interest. Standard day camps and specialty camps will be offered for residents in both east and west Roswell. Specialty camps focus on topics such as health and wellness, STEM, performing arts, cooking, aquatics, and more. A full list of camps and activities are arranged on the city's online registration system, and are displayed in a week-by-week format. There are also physical copies of the Summer Program Guide available. Registration for residents of Roswell begin at 9:00 AM on Monday, March 6. (roswellgov.com)
  3. This month marks the anniversary of an interesting event that occurred in Roswell in 1983. The Georgia Sun reflects on a normal but chaotic event that turned Roswell into "wild west showdown." In 1983 the City of Roswell had an alcohol ordinance to discourage citizens from drinking. Restaurants were allowed to serve alcohol, however, they had to sell more food than alcohol. Bars and excessive drinking were not wanted inside city limits. At a City Council meeting, then Councilmember Scott Childress made statements regarding the patrons of certain establishments in Roswell where alcohol was sold. He specifically noted western attire and some "patterns of dress" that he believed would invite people who “would not benefit the city.” This offended many residents at that time, and at the next council meeting approximately a dozen citizens in western-style clothing formed a "posse" to confront the councilman about his previous statements. The situation was resolved, however, without incident. (thegeorgiasun.com)
  4. Councilman Lee Hills has been appointed as the new City Council liaison for the Roswell Transportation Advisory Commission. Her appointment was made at a council meeting on February 21. She replaced Councilman Mike Palermo in this role. Hills says that she is excited to work the transportation commission. One of her goals to shorten length of meetings by having some discussions outside of set meetings and by doing the “dirty work.” The meeting also focused on solutions to quell traffic for Oxbo Road. The remedies discussed were based on research and evaluation that was recommended by the commission. Some of the ideas discussed were “pinch” islands to narrow the road, three crosswalks to connect city trails and parks, and/or a mini roundabout. (appenmedia.com)
