Here are the top four stories today in Roswell:
1. Despite a request from Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson and a petition with almost 500 signatures from Roswell residents calling on The Georgia Department of Transportation to cancel the Grimes Bridge portion of the express lanes roadwork, GDOT will begin the $1.6 billion GA-400 Express Lane Project. This summer the mayor requested that The Georgia Department of Transportation revise its plans for Ga-400 access lanes in Roswell. That request has been denied. The department will continue to move forward with its initial plan, which offers no changes to prevent increased traffic in the area. In response, the city of Roswell plans to install traffic "calming measures" on Grimes Bridge Road to deter motorists from using the road as a faster way to get to streets in the downtown area. Those exact measures have yet to be announced. The new Grimes Bridge Road interchange will be located south of Holcomb Bridge Road. Residents in the Grimes Bridge area have been expressing their concerns and opposition to project since 2020. (Paywall: ajc.com)
2. The trial has been set for a fireman with the Roswell Police Department who is accused of fatally striking a jogger with his vehicle in July. He is charged with two misdemeanor counts of homicide by vehicle in the second degree as well as failure to yield right of way at a crosswalk. On September 12 the accused waived formal arraignment and pled not guilty. There is a A jury trial scheduled for December 20. (appenmedia.com)
3. The Roswell Fire Department reminded residents of the impending storm from Hurricane Ian. Governor Brian Kemp issued a State of Emergency issued for entire state of Georgia. Per Roswell PD, the effects of the storm are expected to extend beyond the forecast cone. The Roswell area may see peak wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding. There is also the potential for trees to fall and downed power lines. The storm is expected to last from Thursday evening through Saturday. The fire department also reminds residents to have an inclement weather plan. (facebook.com)
4. Roswell Special Events department will still hold the last Reels and Wheels for the year 2022 this evening at East Roswell Park. Food trucks and vendors will open for service at 5:00 PM. The movie screening of "Space Jam: A New Legacy" will be shown at 7:00 PM and representatives from Aurora Cineplex will be providing free popcorn for the show. (instagram.com)
