Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center Adds Robotic Surgery Technology

Wellstar Health System, one of Georgia’s largest and most integrated health systems, announced today that Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center is now using the da Vinci Single Port (SP) robot for certain types of urologic surgery. The da Vinci SP represents the latest advancement in robotic surgery technology from Intuitive. It is the second robot used to treat patients at Wellstar North Fulton and is one of only a few in use in Georgia.

Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center has a long history of utilizing robotic surgery to treat conditions, with more than 5,000 procedures performed using the technology. Conditions treated with robotic surgery include prostate and kidney cancer, urologic reconstruction, gynecological cancer and colon and rectal conditions.

Robotic surgery provides surgeons with enhanced vision, precision and control of surgical movements. The da Vinci SP takes that precision and control one step further by allowing all four robotic instruments to enter the treatment area through one single port instead of four – and allows the surgeon to reach within 360 degrees of that single port. That minimizes trauma to the surrounding surgical areas and provides faster recovery and less pain for patients.

“The da Vinci SP allows me to work in spaces that were previously very difficult to access,” said Scott Miller, MD, a urologist at Wellstar North Fulton. “And, having the ability to insert all four instrument shafts through one small opening enables me to fix the problem with minimal damage to surrounding areas—bringing precision in surgery to new levels.”

Across Wellstar Health System, surgeons use 17 state-of the-art da Vinci robotic surgical systems to care for patients at most Wellstar hospitals and two outpatient surgery centers for a variety of procedures including gynecologic, urologic and cardiac, and cancer surgeries. The da Vinci SP is currently being used at Wellstar North Fulton for various prostate and kidney surgeries.
