Is a New Eatery Next for Suwanee Gateway?

Several improvements are apparently in the works for the beleaguered area. Share your thoughts.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on."

Suwanee residents have long made it clear that a revamp in the Gateway business district is a high priority. And the changes may not be done.

Turns out a new eatery may be next on the list. A "Schlotzy's Deli coming soon" sign is draped near the top of the vacant Mrs. Winner's building on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

Schlotzy's corporate office in Texas has not confirmed any possible plans for Suwanee, although the company has other outlets in Gwinnett.

Still, it represents more potential positive development for the beleaguered area, which has been hit hard in recent years by business failures. The area extends roughly from I-85 along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road to Satellite Boulevard, and was first developed when the interstate was extended to the area.

The most recent effort by the city was to buy the shuttered May Queen hotel for $1.25 million. The property had become an eyesore and crime nest in recent years; the city plans to raze the building and land-bank the property. It could be months before the demolition actually begins, according to city officials.

Other recent development plans for the Gateway area include:

  • The new police substation. and sits on a lot that once housed a vacant gas station.
  • Pedestrian seating areas. Though largely ornamental, these areas are another attempt to beautify the area. (See the attached picture).
  • A self-storage center. Suwanee officials deviated from their master plan and approved the construction of a storage center on Sawmill Drive, behind the Chevron station at the northbound ramp. City officials say plans are progressing.
