Emory Alumna Wins MacArthur Fellowship

'95 grad will receive $500K over five years

An alumna is one of 22 recipients of the 2011 MacArthur Fellowship.

Tiya Miles, who received a master’s degree in Women's Studies from Emory University in 1995, will receive $500,000 over the next five years to support her research and work.

Fellowships are given to “talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction,” according to the foundation’s website.

Miles is a public historian and faculty member at the University of Michigan. Her work “explores the complex relationship between African and Cherokee peoples living and working in colonial America,” according to a news release published by Emory University.
