Here are the top four stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:

  1. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is holding its regular meeting tonight at 6 p.m. in the Admin Complex at 1130 Bluffs Parkway in Canton. There's a good amount on the agenda, you can read that here, including a public hearing on the 2023 Comprehensive Plan update. The document outlines the future growth, development, investment and land use changes in the county, and after receiving the public's input via the official website, it's time for the plan to be put before the Department of Community Affairs and the Atlanta Regional Commission for their review. If you'd like to attend, the official Rules of Procedure are here - you can find the specific rules and standards for public comment on page 12. (Cherokee County Events)
  2. Today is the beginning of National Police Week, a week marked to remember police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to respect and honor those that currently serve the community. On Thursday, the Woodstock Police Department is holding a Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at The Park at City Center, 101 Arnold Mill Road. Chief Tommy Keheley of the Holly Springs Police Department will be the keynote speaker, honoring the 245 American officers that lost their lives in the line of duty in the past year, including 11 from Georgia. The ceremony hasn't been held since 2019 because of the pandemic, so Officer Joseph William Burson, who was lost in June 2021, will also be honored. 3. It's getting hot outside, do you know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke? Woodstock Fire & Rescue posted a National Weather Service infographic explaining the basic differences between them and the treatment for both. Heat exhaustion can cause dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness, and you would want to move the affected person to a cooler area, loosen their clothing, give them cool water to sip and seek medical help if symptoms don't improve. Heat stroke can cause confusion, dizziness and unconsciousness and it is considered an emergency. To help the affected, you would call 911, move the person to a cooler area, loosen their clothing and cool them with water or ice to prevent death or disability. 4. There's a Princess Pool Party coming up at the Cherokee Aquatic Center on June 3. The event will take place in the Rec Pool from 6-9 p.m. and will feature an Ariel character from "The Little Mermaid," who will be singing, dancing, making crafts and taking pictures with your children from 6-7 p.m. Afterwards, the movie will be shown on the screen while the kids relax in the pool. Your child is welcome to wear special princess clothes if they wish, but they will need to bring along a bathing suit. You can sign up for the event here, registration closes on June 2.
