Here are the top five stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:

  1. The Cherokee County School District (CCSD) was named a 2022 Cognia School System of Distinction by the international accreditation organization. Our district was one of only 38 in the world to receive the distinction that honors the districts that "exemplify excellence in education and service to learners." Cognia reviewed the district's operations earlier this year, awarding CCSD a five-year accreditation renewal, the highest score ever received for the district and 11 commendations for excellence. The organization stated no requirements for improvement. (CCSD Press Release)
  2. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and Safe Kids Cherokee County are holding a "Tailgate with a Firefighter" event on October 8 at The Mill on Etowah. Enjoy hot dogs, chips, fun and games and check out the fire trucks. There will be a "Dress Like a Firefighter" contest and all proceeds go to help fund fire safety education.   3. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is looking for a motorcycle and driver, the driver may have entered a vehicle illegally. Please see the post on the sheriff's Facebook page for pictures of the motorcycle and man.   4. The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is holding a Yoga with Kitties class on September 27. The beginner class led by YogaSix BridgeMill is limited to the first 14 paid reservations. Participants must be 18 and up, please bring a yoga mat with you.   5. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners applied for a federal grant aimed to create a safety action plan for pedestrians and bicycles on county roadways. The Safe Streets and Roads for All program could provide as much as $450,000 for the county to create a plan with the aid of community groups and stakeholders to analyze solutions, existing conditions and historical trends. Out of the process, a set of projects, strategies and priorities will be created and the plan will be executed. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
