CCSD Students Earn Top Honors In Congressional Art Show

Cherokee County School District students earned top honors in the annual Congressional Art Competition!

The national competition sponsored by the Congressional Institute recognizes exemplary artwork created by high school students. Students submit entries to the congressional district that represents their school’s area, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. The 11th District exhibit and awards ceremony was held this month at The Downtown Gallery in Cartersville.

River Ridge High School junior Ashley McMath was named the 11th District’s overall winner for her charcoal piece, “The Holy Spirit.” Her artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year. As part of the honor, she received tickets to Washington, D.C. to see her artwork displayed and to meet with Congressman Barry Loudermilk, who represents the 11th District.

Sam Swift, a senior at River Ridge High School, earned second place with her oil portrait diptych, “Homophone.” Woodstock High School senior Emily Coburn won third place with her drawing, “Shopper’s Best Friend.”

“Congratulations to each of these exceptional artists on your award-winning artwork!” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “We’re impressed by your talent and creativity and very proud of your success. We’re also grateful for your outstanding visual arts teachers and the expert guidance they give to you and your classmates each day.”

Ashley is a student of River Ridge HS visual arts teacher MaryJo Mulvey, and Sam is a student of River Ridge HS visual arts teacher Dr. Chris Akins. Emily is a student of Woodstock HS visual arts teacher Lori Thompson.
