Here are the top five stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:

  1. Six members of Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services received their Emergency Response Diver, Level 1 certification last week. The course was held at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center and Lake Allatoona. It was the second certification the divers have completed in their journey to becoming certified Public Safety Divers. The county's Dive Team responds to water-related incidents, conducts underwater search and recovery operations, participates in water safety awareness events and assists law enforcement agencies with underwater evidence collection in the lakes, ponds, tributaries and reservoirs in Cherokee County. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services)
  2. Five students from the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) have been named 2023 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. The seniors from Cherokee, Creekview, Etowah and Sequoyah high schools will be honored by the School Board and superintendent at the School Board's meeting in October. Out of 1.5 million students considered, 16,000 were named semifinalists, an elite group that consists of less than 1% of all high school seniors in the nation. The next step in the competition will include an application outlining academic achievements, participation in school and community activities and a recommendation from a high school official, among many other deliverables. (CCSD Press Release)
  3. The annual Touch-A-Truck is coming up Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cherokee Veterans Park, 7345 Cumming Highway, Canton. Bring the kids for a close-up look at emergency vehicles, including a firetruck, a helicopter, a police car and more. Food, vendors and games for all, with a quiet time "for those with sensitive ears" from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. There will be shuttles arriving at and leaving from Macedonia Elementary School and Macedonia Baptist Church. (Cherokee Recreation & Parks)
  4. Auditions are being held on Sunday and Monday at 6 p.m. for the Woodstock Arts production of "A Christmas Carol." Video audition submissions can be sent to the director, Zach Stolz, at Zach@woodstockarts.org until Monday at 8:30 p.m. In-person callbacks will be held on Wednesday, September 21. Please check out the website for important audition details. (Woodstock Arts)
  5. Woodstock Arts offers a ton of classes, head over to its website to find one that suits you. There are classes for all age groups and the new crop of classes starts up in October, including "Acrylic and Oil Painting," "Clay Kids" and "FUNctional Ceramics." Woodstock Arts also is home to The Lantern Series. The concert series includes artists from different genres, and the next show is coming up on September 24 when The RT's will perform.
