No Pets: Cherokee Marshal's Office Shares 4th Of July Tips

Cherokee Marshal's Office shares safety tips about fireworks and general info on their usage for the 4th of July.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- As Cherokee County residents prep for the 4th of July, the county's Marshal's Office has offered some general information and tips on the state's laws and how to remain safe this holiday.

Major J. Gianfala said in a Facebook post on Monday that his office has gotten several calls and so he wanted to share some information on fireworks and like.

"The use of fireworks is governed by State Law, O.C.G.A. Title 25, Chapter 10 Regulation of Fireworks," he said on Facebook. "Fireworks can be used or ignited on any day beginning at 10:00a.m. And ending at 9:00p.m." He said fireworks could also be lit on July 3, July 4 after 9 p.m. and up to 11:59 p.m.

4th of July: Woodstock Prepares For Fireworks, Parade

He said that you have to 18 years old or older to buy fireworks but the law is kind of fuzzy on who can use them. Fireworks are banned on roads or highways., he said, and it is prohibited to light them within 100 yards of a hospital, nursing home, prison, nuclear power plant or gas station or refinery.

Below are some safety tips from the Facebook post as well:

•Know your fireworks. Read the caution labels and performance descriptions before igniting.

•Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.

•Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.

•Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

•Always have a bucket of water and charged fire extinguisher nearby.

•Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.

•Don’t bring your pets to a fireworks display, even a small one.

•If fireworks are being used near your home, put your pet in a safe, interior room to avoid exposure to the sound.

•Make sure your pet has an identification tag, in case it runs off during a fireworks display
