Cherokee Swimmers Earn State Championships

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — Two of the 57 swimmers who qualified to participate in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Class A State Meet returned home as state champions.

Cherokee County residents qualified for 23 final events at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Class A State Meet held in Cumming July 17-18.

Cal Wiley secured a first-place win and a personal record of 16.99 in the Boys 8U 25-yard butterfly event, and Genevieve McKinley earned first place and a personal record of 17.35 in the Girls 10U 25-yard breast stroke event.

“We are so proud of our Cherokee swimmers,” Cherokee Aquatics Division Director Kim Whatley said in a news release. “All of our swimmers went out and did their best, and we could not be prouder of how they represented Cherokee County on the state level.”

The final results of all events Cherokee County swimmers participated in are:

• Girls 8U 50 yard freestyle - 3rd place Sophie Stephens
• Boys 8U 50 yard freestyle - 3rd place Cal Wiley
• Boys 10U 50 yard freestyle - 8th place Grant Stephens

• Boys 8U 25 yard freestyle - 3rd place Cal Wiley
• Girls 8U 25 yard breast stroke - 5th place Olivia Butcko & 7th place Sophie Stephens
• Girls 10U 25 yard breast stroke - 1st place Genevieve McKinley
• Girls 8U 100 yard IM - 6th place Olivia Butcko
• Girls 8U 25 yard backstroke - 5th place Olivia Butcko
• Boys 8U 25 yard backstroke - 8th place Nicholas Raymond
• Boys 8U 25 yard butterfly - 1st Place Cal Wiley
• Boys 10U 25 yard butterfly - 3rd place Grant Stephens
