- I'm so excited for this one! In recognition of Earth Day and our city's ongoing efforts towards recycling, reusing and reducing, there's going to be a Woodstock City Wide Yard Sale the weekend of April 22. You'll sign up to have your yard sale added to the interactive map on the event's main page and your name and address will be shown in event advertisements placed in several spots online and around town. Registration closes on April 4, so sign up soon if you'd like to participate. There is no cost to enter your sale into the registry and the City of Woodstock will advertise the sale on several media outlets and apps, including the Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch, the kiosk at The Park at City Center, the Parks & Rec website, craigslist and more. After the sale, if you have items left over, you are encouraged to donate them to your favorite charity or to USAgain for reuse or recycling. You can find yard sale tips, the event flyer and the registration button at the link. (Woodstock Parks and Recreation)
- Agriculture students from Cherokee High School recently learned about the installation and management of bird boxes, then used that knowledge to help support the local ecosystem. The students' project will benefit the students and staff long-term, helping in studies related to biology and animal behavior. The bluebird box installation project was researched and completed using the students' gained knowledge in pest and predator deterrent systems, ways of avoiding territorial issues between the birds, placement of the boxes to where they wouldn't get too hot or too cool with added attention to the bluebird mating season and ways to encourage nesting and egg laying in the bird boxes. - Who doesn't love some good jazz and an evening breeze? Jazz Night at Woodstock Arts is coming up on March 31 at 6 p.m. Tables and chairs are set up for you to use and the night is rain or shine, but there is a tent in case of rain. The live music will play from the back porch at the Reeves House and the outdoor bar will have charcuterie boards, wine and beer available for purchase. There are other options in coffee drinks and snacks inside the Reeves House. While you're there, be sure to check out the current exhibit in the gallery, "Through the Looking Glass: Art + Science." From my notebook:
- I've noticed that there are quite a few county and city jobs available. If you're job hunting at the moment, here are some of the departments hiring:
- Cherokee Recreation & Parks - looking to hire a recreation coordinator (Civic Alerts)
- Cherokee County - many open positions, you can sort the list by selecting "posting start date" and checking the box for "sort descending" (Cherokee County Human Resources)
- Woodstock Police Department - looking to hire certified officers (Woodstock PD via Facebook)
- City of Woodstock - several open positions, including HR generalist, Code Enforcement Officer, recreation specialist, seasonal recreation aide, process planner and building inspector. (City of Woodstock)
- If you have yard debris to get rid of or some pruning to take care of, don't forget that the annual burn ban runs from May 1 - September 30. Now's a great time to get that done, though the conditions should always be checked on the day you will be burning. You can check online here or call the Georgia Forestry Commission at 877-652-2876. You do not need a permit for yard debris or recreational fires, but permits are required for bonfires and land clearing fires. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services)
- Do you have an animal shaped hole in your life? Take a look at these amazing and adorable pets waiting for a loving family in the Woodstock-Towne Lake area. (Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch)
