Here are the top four stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:
- Cherokee County received a Preservation Award for the renovations done at the Hickory Flat Gymnasium. Starting in 2021, improvements were made to almost every portion of the building from floor to ceiling, including the preservation of original bleachers, floors and wood posts. The upgrades made include the HVAC system, roofing, insulation and more. ADA-compliant building access was also created. The building, leased from the Cherokee County School District, now holds sports, fitness, children and senior programs along with special events and rentals. History Cherokee announced the award at the Historic Preservations Awards Banquet last week. (Cherokee County Press Release)
- Woodstock Arts is opening its new gallery exhibit, "Paper Cuts," today. The exhibit will run until October 23, starting with an opening reception tonight at 6 p.m. at the Reeves House. "Paper Cuts" consists of art from around the country selected specifically for this exhibit. All artwork is created from paper by folding, cutting, layering or manipulated in another way. There is no charge for the exhibit, but the artwork is available to purchase. (Woodstock Arts)
- Cherokee County Fire and Emergency recognized the promotions of two firefighters on Tuesday. On August 8, Holt Bambarger was promoted to sergeant, and Josh Thomas was promoted to lieutenant. The two firefighters were presented with new badges and collar insignias, surrounded by family, friends and fellow firefighters in the Tuesday celebration at the Fire Training Complex in Holly Springs. - With help from MUST Ministries, Cherokee County is accepting applications for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. The program for renters helps provide rental and utility assistance to help keep residents in their homes. To be considered for the program, at least one or more individuals in the home must meet certain criteria: They must qualify for unemployment or have experienced a reduction in household income due to COVID-19, be able to demonstrate a risk of homelessness or housing instability, and have a household income at or below 80% of the area median income level. You can apply online on the MUST Ministries website. (Subscription: Atlanta Journal Constitution)
