Drivers Could Lose Their Cellphones

The National Transportation Safety Board is proposing a nationwide ban of all cellphone use behind the wheel.

I have a teenage addiction to my cellphone, I don't mind admitting it. It tends to spill over into my car while I'm driving, and I can't resist checking texts, reviewing reminders, and yes, even responding to emails.

But, I know I am not the only one. Sadly, most of us would be lost without our cellphones.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday it wants to ban cellphone use behind the wheel in all states. The Washington Post reported this is the first federal agency to call for an outright prohibition on telephone conversations while driving in nonemergency situations. This would mean no calling, texting or even hands-free devices for drivers.

While Georgia is among the 35 states that already bans texting while driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said an estimated 3,092 deaths last year can be contributed to distracted drivers, including cellphone use behind the wheel.

"The data is clear; the time to act is now. How many more lives will be lost before we, as a society, change our attitudes about the deadliness of distractions?" said National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman in a news release.
