Here are the top five stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:
- The evacuation on Wednesday of Etowah High School due to a bomb threat was handled quickly thanks to the support of local law enforcement and the cooperation of parents. The school was evacuated at 11:15 a.m. and students were brought to E.T. Booth Middle School for family reunification. Parents were asked to keep the roads clear and not head to Etowah HS and to keep the phone lines open by not calling the school. After a search of the school by multiple K-9 units and officers, there was no danger found. All evening activities proceeded as planned Wednesday. School was scheduled to resume today as usual. The county will likely seek prosecution and disciplinary actions against the person or persons that made this threat. Anyone with knowledge that would be helpful to the investigation is asked to reach out to the CCSD Police at 770-704-4354 or to make a report via the Vector Alert System. Tips can be reported anonymously. (Cherokee County School District)
- The Cherokee County Animal Shelter and the ASPCA have suggested creating a pet emergency kit in cases of evacuation or other emergencies. There are eight items suggested, including a first aid kit, food and food dishes for seven days, garbage bags, dish soap, disinfectant, bottled water for seven days and an extra collar or harness, leash and ID tag. You can see the entire posting online here. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
- The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is conducting SWAT training around Woodstock today. Don't be alarmed, there will be a large police presence during the training. Please expect activity in the areas of Palm Street and Toonigh Road from 8 a.m. to noon and Fincher Road and Deer Track Drive from 1 - 5 p.m. (Cherokee Sheriff's Office via Facebook)
- Officer J. Haile of the Woodstock Police Department was recognized Tuesday at the 6th Annual Public Safety Luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club of Canton. At the luncheon, Officer J. Haile was awarded the Colonel George Bailey Distinguished Leader Award. Officer Haile was recognized for his 10 years of service in the US Marine Corps and his service to Woodstock. (Woodstock PD via Facebook)
- The first class in the upcoming Parent University series is being held tonight at Woodstock City Church, 150 Ridgewalk Parkway. The class, Student Mental Health, Wellness and Suicide Prevention, is for parents and family members of county students aimed at helping to support local students. Presented by the CCSD, Cherokee County Council PTA and Northside Hospital Cherokee, the evening will include a presentation by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and breakout sessions on topics like crisis response, conflict resolution and the impact of social media.
