- A four-vehicle crash in Cherokee County tragically took the lives of the Mayor of Emerson, Albert Pallone, and his wife on Saturday. The crash occurred on Knox Bridge Highway around 4 p.m. and was set off when a driver suspected to be under the influence crossed the center line, hitting a Mazda 3 and the mayor's Hyundai Santa Fe. The Santa Fe flipped into the eastbound lane where it was hit by a GMC Savanna. William Abernathy of Calhoun was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI, reckless driving, first degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle. Abernathy, Pallone and Pallone's wife were the only three injured in the crash. The Pallones were pronounced dead at the scene. Abernathy is currently being treated at an area hospital. (WSB-TV)
- If you made it out to the parade last week, you probably saw the odd looking mobile bar surrounded by bicycle pedal-equipped bar seats. That is a new business venture downtown, the Pedal Punk Atlanta tour bike. There is a good bit of information to take in regarding the tours, rules and accommodations, so make sure to click the link for more detail. The tour lasts about an hour and the bike can be rented per seat or per group. While alcohol isn't served on the bike, drinking is allowed and stops are made so that riders can top off their cups at area restaurants and bars. You can book ahead or walk right up to the bike if you see it around town and there are available seats, but you must be 21 or older to ride. However, there is the ability to book private parties for those under 21, and no alcohol will be allowed on those rides. There will be music, trivia, sports, games and other fun activities planned for the rides. The bike is even wheelchair accessible. If you see it downtown, hop on up and enjoy a nice tour of the area. - After failing its November 21 health inspection with a rating of 43-U (unsatisfactory), 7 Tequilas Mexican Restaurant on Holly Springs Parkway was re-inspected and issued with an 85-B. The new health inspection dated November 30 specifically states that the proper cold holding temperature is now met and that there are no insects, rodents or animals present. As a note, the restaurant was previously inspected in early October and obtained a 90-A at that time. (Atlanta News First and North Georgia Health District)
- Would you like to support Bryce Leatherwood on "The Voice" with other Woodstock neighbors and friends tonight? There is a watch party going on from 7 - 10 p.m. on the Green downtown. The television show will be played on the big screen. Home viewers will be invited to vote for their favorite when the website activates the voting link at the 8 p.m. show's start. Leatherwood will be performing as one of the five finalists, the winner of the public vote will be announced during Tuesday's results show. Bring a chair and blanket — this is a rain-or-shine event. - The Cherokee County Animal Shelter has extended its special holiday adoption event once again! Last week, 55 pets from the shelter found their new homes, but there are still some gorgeous little love bugs looking for a family to call theirs. Tinsel is still at the shelter with his amazing little eyebrows, and you can see the rest of the available animals here. The shelter updates the list at 5:30 p.m. each Friday. You can head to the shelter any day from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and the adoption fee is waived for all pets this week. Each one will go home with their spay or neuter, heartworm and leukemia testing, initial vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative and microchipping completed free of charge.
