First Baptist Woodstock Names Co-Pastor

Jeremy Morton, senior pastor of Cartersville First Baptist Church, is slated to succeed Johnny Hunt as senior pastor of the church.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- First Baptist Church of Woodstock has named Jeremy Morton as the co-pastor who will work alongside Johnny Hunt, the church's longtime leader who will soon transition into a new role with North American Mission Board.

Morton, senior pastor at Cartersville First Baptist Church, preached in view of the call at both morning services on Sunday, and he was approved by the church for the co-pastor role. Morton, First Baptist Woodstock, said will eventually succeed Hunt as senior pastor. However, Hunt will make the final call on when that transition will take place.

"This will ensure that First Baptist Woodstock is set up to experience our best days moving forward," the church said.

As readers recall, Hunt was nominated to serve as senior vice president of Evangelism and Leadership with the North American Mission Board. He is expected to begin serving in that post at the beginning of 2019.

Morton became the senior pastor of Cartersville First Baptist Church in the fall of 2013. Before that, he was senior pastor at Cross Point Baptist Church in Perry since the church's founding in 2002. Morton, who has been preaching since he was 16 years old, earned his bachelor's degree in Christianity from Brewton Parker College in 2004. He obtained his Master of Divinity in Biblical Studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 2007, and once he completes his dissertation, will receive his Doctor of Ministry in Expository Preaching from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Morton and wife, Carrie, are the parents of three children.

"The Morton’s believe God’s call upon their family is to immerse themselves in the local church," First Baptist Church of Woodstock said. "They have a clear passion for people and their community. Their earnest prayer is for God’s glory to be displayed in their personal and public life as a family."

NAMB's board of trustees is slated to vote on Hunt's appointment at its Oct. 2 meeting. The organization said the Evangelism and Leadership group was formed earlier in August and that Jim Law, who is FBCW's executive pastor, will oversee the day-to-day operations of that arm of NAMB. Law's appointment becomes effective Oct. 1.
