  1. Freedom Middle School teacher Kim Hester has been named a 2022 Teacher of the Year. Hester has been teaching seventh-grade math for 29 years and helped put the "flipped classroom" model in place during the pandemic. The model, still in use today, consists of mixed video and in-class sessions, allowing students to watch a video introducing a topic as homework so that they are ready to ask questions and practice the concept with the teacher the next day. According to the Cherokee County School District, through the model, "student learning mastery has increased and homework frustration has decreased." (CCSD Press Release)
  2. Members of the School Board visited Woodstock Elementary School last week along with the Superintendent of Schools. The group met with Principal Ann Jordan and the leadership team, toured the school and ate lunch in the cafeteria. The School Board members regularly visit schools in the county. (CCSD Press Release)
  3. Children are increasing their screen time as school progresses, so it's important to monitor their online presence and teach good habits. Some good ideas are to open up communication and review the privacy settings on internet-capable devices. Many internet providers offer dashboards to limit based on times, ratings or site names, and some even offer the ability to close out the internet connections to specific devices at specific times. Check out the ten ideas in the article for more ideas on how to limit screen time. (Family Life Magazine)
