  1. The members of "Nimble Fingers," a crochet and knitting group at the William G. Long Senior Center, met up to create 3-foot by 5-foot mats for the American Legion to be donated to the Cherokee Homeless Veterans Program. The bedbug and lice resistant mats are constructed by crocheting plastic shopping bags together, each mat using 700 bags. Initially, 12 mats were donated through the program, but there is a group of volunteers meeting every Thursday at the senior center to continue the project with the remaining 14,000 or so bags. The group is open to new volunteers via the senior center. For more information or to volunteer, please reach out to the center at 678-445-6518. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
  2. An online fundraiser has been created by a Canton woman to help a community rebuild from the damage done by Hurricane Fiona in the Dominican Republic. Jessenia Kahn created a GoFundMe with a goal of $5,000 to directly benefit her cousin's community to help with construction and needed resources. So far, a little over $1,000 has been raised. 3. The Woodstock Police Department welcomed three new officers on Friday. Officers Mitton, Geiger and Rhodes officially joined the squad after graduating from the GPSTC - Pickens Police Academy earlier in the day, with Officer Aubrey Geiger earning the class flag. You can see pictures of the day on the department's Facebook page. Congratulations! (Woodstock PD via Facebook)
  4. Registration is open for a couple of upcoming classes and leagues hosted by Cherokee Recreation and Parks. Cherokee Youth Basketball registration is open until October 2 and Gymnastics & Dance for ages 3-4 is now open for the session starting October 12. Be sure to take a look at the upcoming classes and full schedules on the website. The center is also always looking for volunteer coaches and gym directors. If you are interested, please see the volunteer web page for more information. (Cherokee Recreation and Parks via Facebook)
